A Symbol of Community Spirit and Cooperation Initial
Bogarchar Central Cemetery (BCC) was established in 2020 to ensure respectful burial services for poor and underprivileged people. The cemetery is located in Bogarchar village under Bakshiganj Upazila of Jamalpur District.
As of 2025, the cemetery is run by 140 active members who collect funds from local villagers. So far, the organization has raised nearly 50 lakh BDT (about USD 41,000). It owns 1.3 acres of land and has helped bury more than 100 people with dignity and care.
The vision for our graveyard is to bring positive change to our society by uniting the villagers and standing against any form of injustice.
Bogarchar is a village located in Bakshiganj Upazila of Jamalpur District of Bangladesh close to the Indian border. Despite having a population of over 10,000 the village has a very low literacy rate. Most of the residents are illiterate as a result they are often unaware of their social and communal needs.
Although it is a large village, Bogarchar had no public graveyard before 2020. The entire population is Muslim, and according to Islamic tradition, the deceased must be buried in the ground. Burial spaces are not reused for at least three generations, which gradually leads to a serious shortage of housing land for poor family. Many families were losing their living space and some even struggled to find a place to bury their loved ones.
A few people have before tried to build the cemetery, but they were never successful. Later, Md. Mosharof Hosen, a socially conscious youth, deeply felt the need for a cemetery in the village. Realizing the urgent need, he took the initiative to establish a cemetery through his own social volunteering organization.
However, the project was successfully completed because to his great leadership, integrity, and bravery. Today, the cemetery stands as a proud achievement for the entire village.
(Below is a summary of some of the most notable activities and initiatives that Bogarchar Central Cemetery (BCC) has successfully undertaken in the past)
In December 2020, we, under the leadership of Md. Mosharof Hosen, organized an initial discussion meeting to take the first step toward establishing a cemetery in our village. The meeting was held at the office of Adammya Torun Sangho (ATS), the social volunteering organization founded by him. During the meeting, we emphasized the urgent need for a proper burial ground in our large village, where such a facility had long been absent.
This initiative sparked a strong sense of awareness and unity among the villagers. Realizing the importance of the project, the community became actively interested and extended their full support to turn the vision into reality.
After the first meeting, it was understood that the message needed to be shared more especially with the important and respected people in the village, whose help was necessary to start the cemetery project. They were approached politely and regular contact was kept to earn their trust and support. In time, the value of the project was understood and a meeting with our team was agreed on.

They were approached politely and regular contact was kept to earn their trust and support. In time, the value of the project was understood and a meeting with our team was agreed on.
On that day, people from all areas of the village gathered in one place, as previously announced. At that moment, the entire community united. The attendees listened attentively to the meeting and showed great enthusiasm in supporting the initiative. Many arrived carrying money with them, eager to donate. During the middle of the meeting, we began collecting donations and recorded the names of those who promised to contribute a certain amount.
By the end of the discussion, we had collected nearly one lakh BDT (1000 USD) in cash. In addition, several people promised to donate more funds specifically for purchasing land.
After completing the large village meeting, we started searching for land the very next morning. The night before, we had discussed and selected a few recommended locations to visit. We went to five possible places in different parts of the village. All of them were privately owned, not public or unused lands.
After considering all the options, we chose a centrally located land. It was private property, but it was the most suitable for everyone because it was easy to access from all parts of the village.
Since we chose the most recommended private land, we had to negotiate with the landowner to buy it. But it wasn’t easy because the land was valuable, and the area was quite large. All the important people involved in the project went to the landowner’s house to discuss and negotiate.
Finally, the owner agreed to sell the land for a high price. We accepted their demand and decided to buy it. After that, we started raising funds for the purchase.
We divided the whole village into nine areas and visited each one to hold meetings with the local people. In each meeting, Md Mosharof Hosen made a list of the people present and noted down how much money they promised to donate for the cemetery project. After many days of work, we finally completed and finalized the list of donors from all nine areas.
According to the list of donors, we collect the promised money by going door-to-door. The total number of donors in village is more than 1200 peoples. The amount of money promised to them stands at around 40 lakh BDT (34,000 USD). In the initial phase, we were able to withdraw 8 lakh BDT from all the villager.
With this money, we purchased 0.3 acres of the land in the initial stage. By withdrawing the funds in phases, we are buying an additional 1.00 acre of the land.
The land was legally registered in the names of five trusted community leaders—including Md. Mosharof Hosen—and declared as waqf. Later purchases were similarly waqf in the names of 40 local representatives.
Now spanning 1.3 acres, the cemetery officially began its journey in 2021 with the burial of a 10-year-old child. As of today, more than 100 people have been laid to rest there, offering dignity and peace to families during their most difficult times.
In order to protect the transparency of the organization, we organize a large discussion meeting to reveal the collected funds to the public. All the income and expenses are disclosed in the meeting. In this way, a large institution of our village is visible through long hard work. This institution is an institution of pride for our villagers.
